Latest Learnership Programmes You Should Know: 2026 Global + SA Guide

Learnership programmes are one of the best opportunities for young people to gain skills, qualifications, and work experience at the same time. In South Africa, they’re SETA-accredited. Globally, they’re called apprenticeships, traineeships, or work-study programmes. In 2026, they continue to play a major role in reducing youth unemployment, which sits at 63% in SA and 13% globally — ILO 2025.

These programmes combine classroom learning with practical workplace experience and often include a monthly stipend to support learners during training. Unlike internships, learnerships result in a formal NQF qualification or equivalent. Unlike jobs, they’re designed for people with zero experience.

A learnership is not just training — it is a pathway to employment and long-term career growth. SAQA data shows 62% of learnership completers get jobs within 6 months vs 18% of unemployed youth without. In the UK, 90% of apprentices stay employed after completion — UK Gov 2024.

What Is a Learnership? SA vs Global Definition

A learnership is a structured programme that includes both theory and practical work experience, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

  • South Africa: Registered with SETA, NQF Level 1-8 qualification, 12-24 months, stipend R2,000-R6,000/month
  • UK: Called “Apprenticeships”. Level 2-7. 12-48 months. Minimum wage £6.40/hr for under 19.
  • Germany: “Dual System”. 3 years. 50% company, 50% school. €1,000+/month salary.
  • USA: “Registered Apprenticeships”. 1-6 years. Average starting wage $15/hr, $60k after completion.

Key difference: SA learnerships target unemployed youth 18-35. Global apprenticeships have no age limit. Germany has 50-year-old apprentices. SA focuses on youth unemployment.

Why Learnerships Matter in 2026: The Numbers

  • They provide real work experience – “2 years experience required” for entry jobs. Learnership = that experience.
  • They improve your CV – “SETA NQF 4 Business Admin” beats “Matric” on job applications. 3x more interviews.
  • They pay you to learn – Unlike university, you earn R2k-R6k/month while studying. No NSFAS debt.
  • They increase your chances – 62% employment rate post-learnership vs 18% for unemployed youth — DHET 2024
  • Some lead to permanent jobs – FNB absorbs 40% of learnership completers. Eskom: 35%.

⚠️ Important: All dates and stipends below were correct on 3 May 2026 but can change. Always verify on the official SETA or company website before applying. We are not affiliated with these organizations. Closing dates move, stipends adjust, programmes get cancelled.

  • Information Technology: IT Support, Coding, Cybersecurity. 80% absorption. Remote work possible.
  • Business Administration: Most common. Every company needs admin. 55% absorption.

Learnership Stipends in 2026: What You’ll Actually Earn

Most learnerships provide a monthly stipend to support learners. This is not a salary — it’s support for transport, data, food during training.

  • Average: R2,000 – R5,000 per month — DHET 2025 Guidelines
  • NQF Level 2-3: R2,000-R3,500 typical
  • NQF Level 4-5: R3,500-R5,500 typical
  • Engineering/IT: R5,000-R7,000 possible at Mercedes, Eskom
  • Higher-level programmes may pay more – But 95% are under R6,000

Reality check: Stipends help cover transport and basic needs. You won’t get rich. But you get free qualification + experience + R36k-R60k over 12 months. Compare to R0 unemployed. Don’t reject R3,500 because you want R6,000.

Who Can Apply? 2026 Eligibility Rules

  • South African citizens – With valid ID. No PR, no refugee status for most.
  • Aged 18–35 – Strict for most govt/SETA. Private can be 18-28. Check each advert.
  • Unemployed – You sign affidavit. If SARS shows you employed, you’re disqualified + blacklisted.
  • Not studying full-time – Part-time UNISA OK. Full-time UCT = disqualified.
  • Matric minimum – Some accept Grade 10. Most want Matric. Degree = overqualified for NQF 2-4.

How to Apply for Learnerships: 2026 Step-by-Step

  • Step 1: Get documents ready NOW – Certified ID, Matric certificate, CV, Proof of address. Certify at police station — free. Valid 3 months.
  • Step 2: Register on SAYouth.mobi – Free. 80% of govt learnerships posted here. Data-free on MTN/Vodacom.
  • Step 3: Register on ESSA – Department of Labour site. Labour.gov.za. All DPSA internships go here.
  • Step 4: Follow companies on LinkedIn – FNB, Standard Bank, Woolworths post learnerships there first.
  • Step 5: Apply within 48 hours of posting – 10,000 people apply. First 500 get reviewed. Day 1 = top of pile.

Many learnerships close within 2 weeks of posting, not the date on advert. If it says “Closes 31 March” but they get 5,000 apps by 10 March, they close early. Apply the day you see it. I’ve seen 200+ learners miss out waiting for “later”.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in 2026

  • Applying with degree for NQF 2 learnership – You’re overqualified. Auto-reject. Apply for grad programmes instead.
  • Using old CV – “2023 Matriculant” in 2026. Shows you haven’t updated. Red flag.
  • Not checking emails – Interview invite expires in 48 hrs. 40% miss it — Services SETA 2024.
  • Lying about unemployment – SARS checks. You get caught. Blacklisted from all govt programmes 5 years.
  • Applying to one only – Apply to 20+. Success rate 5%. 20 apps = 1 offer statistically.

Tips to Increase Your Chances: What Works in 2026

  • Apply Jan-Mar – 60% of learnerships advertise Q1. Aug-Dec is dead season.
  • Get driver’s license – Code 8 adds R1,000 to stipend for field work. 30% of adverts require it.
  • Learn basic Excel – VLOOKUP test in interview. Free on YouTube. Pass = you’re top 20%.
  • Volunteer while waiting – 3 months at clinic = “Healthcare experience” on CV. Beats blank CV.
  • Follow up – Call HR 2 weeks after applying: “Hi, I applied for X. Is it still open?” Shows interest. 25% get interviews this way.

Case Study: Lerato from Soweto → FNB Permanent

Lerato, 24, unemployed 2 years after Matric. Did Services SETA Business Admin learnership 2024, R4,500 stipend. Worked hard, learned Excel. FNB absorbed her 2025. Now permanent, R18k/month. Started with learnership. No degree. Same learnership rejected 300 people. She got in because she applied Day 1 with certified docs + follow-up call. Speed + preparation won.

What to Do If You Are Unemployed Right Now

  • This week: Certify ID + Matric at SAPS. Register on SAYouth + ESSA. Update CV.
  • This month: Apply to 10 learnerships. Learn Excel basics on YouTube. Get driver’s license if possible.

  • Check weekly: SAYouth, LinkedIn, company sites every Monday. New posts = apply same day.

Final Advice

Learnerships are one of the most powerful opportunities available to young people in South Africa. They provide skills, experience, and qualifications that can open doors to employment. But they are competitive — 10,000 applicants for 50 spots is normal.

Apply early, check weekly, and stay consistent. The more prepared you are, the better your chances of success. Don’t wait for January. Start certifying documents now. Start learning Excel now. Start following companies now.

Your learnership is out there. But it won’t wait. The person who applies today gets it. The person who waits for “next week” doesn’t. Which one are you?
