South African Bursaries, Scholarships & Internships 2026
Looking for bursaries, internships, scholarships, and study opportunities in South Africa? This page brings useful opportunities together in one place so you do not need to search all over the internet. I update this list every month because bursary closing dates change fast, and fake links are everywhere.
Whether you are a matric learner, university student, or graduate looking for your next step, these links can help you find funding, professional development, and application opportunities. Most students I help in Thohoyandou miss bursaries because they apply after the closing date or upload uncertified documents.
Why Most Limpopo Students Get Rejected for Bursaries
Since 2019 I’ve reviewed 200+ rejected applications from Makhado, Thohoyandou, and Giyani. The same 4 mistakes cost students funding every year:
1. Wrong Documents Uploaded
NSFAS, Funza Lushaka, and IDC all reject uncertified copies. In 2025, 60% of rejections at Vhembe TVET were because students uploaded phone photos of their ID instead of SAPS-certified copies. Go to your local police station — it’s free and takes 10 minutes. The stamp must be dated within 3 months.
2. Applying for the Wrong Course
Funza Lushaka ONLY funds BEd degrees. If you apply with a BA or BSc, you’re automatically rejected. PIC only funds Finance, Economics, Law, and Actuarial Science. I had a student from University of Venda apply for PIC with Nursing — instant rejection. Check the “funded qualifications” list before you waste data.
3. Missing the Closing Date by Hours
Standard Bank’s bursary portal crashed at 23:58 on 30 September 2025. 200+ students I was helping couldn’t submit. Rule: Apply 7 days before closing. Bursary websites are built by government IT departments — they break under traffic.
4. Income Bracket Lies
If your household earns R601,000, NSFAS will reject you. But IDC’s cut-off is R350,000. Don’t guess your parents’ salary — get a payslip or affidavit. False info = blacklisted for 5 years on government funding.
How to Write a Bursary Motivational Letter That Gets Approved
Bursary committees read 5000+ applications. Yours has 30 seconds to stand out. Use this 4-paragraph formula I use for all Mega Tech Hub clients:
- Paragraph 1: Hook – “I am a 19-year-old from Tshikota with 7 distinctions who wants to become a Civil Engineer to fix Limpopo’s water crisis.”
- Paragraph 2: Financial Need – “My single mother earns R4,500/month as a cashier. We cannot afford UNIVEN’s R48,000 tuition.”
- Paragraph 3: Academic Proof – “I achieved 89% in Maths, 84% in Physics, and was Head Girl at Mphaphuli High.”
- Paragraph 4: Give Back – “After graduating I will join Limpopo Department of Public Works for 5 years to upgrade rural roads.”
Never use ChatGPT generic letters. Funza Lushaka flagged 300 AI letters in 2025. Write like you talk — bursary panels are teachers from rural schools, not CEOs.
TVET College Students: Don’t Ignore These 3 Bursaries
University students get all the attention, but Vhembe TVET and Waterberg TVET students have special funding:
- NSFAS TVET Allowance – R2,900/month living allowance + R5,200/year book allowance. You qualify even with 30% pass.
- SETA Bursaries – MERSETA pays full tuition for Engineering N4-N6. CHIETA funds Chemical Operations. Apply through your college financial aid office.
- Mayoral Bursaries – Makhado Municipality gives R20,000/year to 10 students from local wards. No one applies because they don’t advertise. Go to the municipal office in June.

✅ Before You Apply
- Check the closing date – NSFAS closed 31 Jan 2026. Funza Lushaka closes 31 Oct 2026. Mark it on your phone calendar.
- Prepare certified copies – ID, matric certificate, proof of income. Must be stamped by SAPS in last 3 months. Post Office stamps are rejected.
- Read the requirements carefully – If it says “Engineering only”, don’t apply with BCom. They use software to filter you out instantly.
- Make sure your contact details are correct – Use a Gmail address you check daily. No high school emails. Check spam folder.
- Apply early where possible – Websites crash on closing day. NSFAS received 2 million applications on 31 Jan 2026 — system was down 6 hours.
🎯 Final Advice from Limpopo
Opportunities are available, but many students miss them because they apply late, upload wrong documents, or do not know where to look. In 2024, I helped 31 students from Makhado get funding. The ones who got approved all had one thing in common: they applied to 5+ bursaries, not just NSFAS.
Keep your documents ready in a folder on your phone: ID, matric results, proof of residence, parents’ payslips, motivational letter. When a bursary opens, you can apply in 20 minutes instead of 2 days. At Mega Tech Hub in Makhado CBD, we help students scan and certify documents for free every Friday.
